A sausage-loving pupil from Billingham, Stockton-on-Tees has won first prize in a national sausage competition for primary schools.
Seven year old Sophie Presley, a pupil at Roseberry Primary School was chosen as the winner from a staggering 20,000 entries!
Organised by the British Pig Executive (BPEX) to coincide with the 10th annual British Sausage Week (15-21 October 2007), the competition challenged Key Stage One pupils to colour in a special birthday card for the Sausage Week mascot ‘Mr Sausage’. Key Stage Two pupils were tasked with completing a sausage themed word search puzzle and also writing a short sentence explaining why they love to eat sausages.
Sophie correctly identified all the key sausage related words in the puzzle and declared her favourite sausage based meal as good old sausage and mash with gravy to win £100 of Toys R Us vouchers as her Sausage Week prize.
Thanks to Sophie’s winning entry Roseberry Primary School also received a School Standard Microscope plus £100 to donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, the lead charity for British Sausage Week.
BPEX foodservice trade manager Tony Goodger said “We know children love sausages and they are a great food that they can enjoy as part of school meals. The competition to celebrate British Sausage Week is always hugely popular but 2007 exceeded our expectations. With 20,000 entries the judging was a difficult task but Sophie’s entry stood out; she clearly loves eating sausages and thought that Sausage Week was really good fun, which is great to hear!”
Melanie Ryder, area catering manager for Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, said: “We’re delighted for Sophie and Roseberry Primary School. Quality sausages, particularly those that have a reduced fat and sodium content can form part of a healthy balanced diet and fit perfectly within the budgetary and nutritional guidelines for school meals.”
Mrs. Gordon, head teacher of Roseberry Primary School said: “The whole school really enjoyed taking part in the sausage competition this year. We’re very pleased for Sophie and are delighted to receive the microscope. The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is a very worthy cause and we hope that the £100 donation helps with their vital work to help youngsters with this life threatening disease.”
