A company set up only 18 months ago to supply quality British food to schools has picked up yet another accolade at a special award ceremony in the House of Lords.
UK Foodhall received a special ‘Services to Sausages Award’ from the British Sausage Appreciation Society in recognition of the fact that the sausages it supplies to schools are produced from Quality Standard Mark pork and to high nutritional standards designed specifically for school meals.
The company was formed in 2007 by Karen McQuade and Robert Clark, who between them have over 30 years’ experience in the school meals sector. Their aim was to supply only local authorities with a range of quality assured British foods – “our slogan is ‘Great British Food for Great British Kids’,” said Karen.
“We set up UK Foodhall because we wanted to make a difference. All the products we supply to school meal caterers are made to the relevant nutritional guidelines published by the School Food Trust.”
Earlier this year the company was chosen as the School Meals Supplier of the Year by the Local Authority Caterers’ Association (LACA).
UK Foodhall now has the best-selling sausage in the school meals sector, supplying 8,000 schools and capturing an estimated 60% share of the market. The sausages supplied are made from Quality Standard pork.
BPEX foodservice trade manager, Tony Goodger, said: “While the award is made in the spirit of the British Sausage Appreciation Society’s aim of bringing fun to the celebration of one of Britain’s favourite foods, it also recognises the very important aspect of promoting quality ingredients in school meals as well as well as the fact that in sourcing Quality Standard product the company is meeting the Government’s Public Sector Food Procurement Initiative criteria.”
BPEX has developed a DVD entitled ‘Sausages come from Pigs’ to demonstrate the sausage-making process, from farm to plate. The five minute DVD aimed at children aged between eight and 11 years aims to help them understand where their food comes from, as well as promoting sausages as an important part of school meals. Copies of the DVD are available from BPEX on request by calling 01908 844 114.
