A young pupil at St Joseph’s Primary School in Uttoxeter has won first prize in a national competition that celebrated British Sausage Week 2008 (3-9 November).

Five year old Evelina Rodriguez was chosen as the winner of the Key Stage 1 colouring competition from more than 32,500 entries and was awarded with her prizes by British Sausage Week mascot ‘Mr Sausage’ at a special school assembly.

For expertly colouring in a picture of Mr Sausage and his family, Evelina received a £100 voucher of choice and a microscope for the school, as well as a framed certificate, medal and a £100 cheque to donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust – the lead charity for British Sausage Week.

Key Stage 2 pupils were also included in the competition, which challenged them to complete a sausage themed word search and write a short sentence explaining why they like to eat sausages.

Tony Goodger, BPEX foodservice trade manager said: “The schools competition is always very popular but this year was a phenomenal success with a total of 57,248 entries, so many congratulations go to Evelina for producing such a wonderful picture.

“British Sausage Week celebrates the fact that sausages can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet – in and out of school – and this competition demonstrates that they really are much loved by the nation’s youngsters.”

Joyce Cassidy, head teacher of St Joseph’s Primary School said: “All of the children enjoyed taking part in the competition – and of course meeting Mr Sausage. We are delighted for Evelina and will all enjoy using the microscope.”

The £100 donation to the CF Trust will support their vital work to help youngsters with this life threatening disease, about 80 of whom are in Staffordshire.
